Peace Keepers Set for CAR (Central African Republic)
The Times of Zambia (Ndola) - December 5, 2001 - A PEACE keeping force is destined for the trouble-torn Central African Republic following a successful peace deal brokered by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and warring factions in Khartoum during the week.
On arrival from a one day summit at International Airport yesterday, President Chiluba who is OAU chairman said some concerned neighbouring countries had agreed to set up a revolving fund for the Central African Republic which would help it rescucitate its crippled economy.
The President who described the talks as a success said all the belligerents including government were geared for the peace process. A follow up meeting was scheduled yesterday in the Gabonese capital of Libreville.
He said the meeting agreed to set up a committee of foreign affairs ministers who would continue with the peace process.
"The talks went well, a decision to set up a peace keeping force in collaboration with the UN was agreed upon, dialogue with all stakeholders including warring factions and government will continue," President Chiluba said.
The Central African Republic has been embroiled in fierce fighting since May when a former military leader attempted a coup on the government of President Ange Patasse.
Former army chief of staff General Bozize was in October implicated in the coup and fighting flared up again when government forces attempted to arrest him.
Libyan forces have been placed in the city of Bangui to protect the presidential villa.
